The ICO is a U.K.-based independent body set up to uphold information rights. It is a non-departmental public body which reports directly to the parliament and is sponsored by the [Ministry of Justice](http://www.crunchbase.com/organization/uk-ministry-of-justice). The ICO deals with the data protection act 1998 and the privacy and electronic communications (EC directive) regulations 2003 across the U.K. as well as the freedom of information act 2000 and the environmental information regulations 2004.
